While I was in Vernal last weekend for Mother's Day, Jacquelyn & I decided to go get some asparagus she has seen. We gathered up little Taysen & headed down the road. Walking along with our knive & plastic sack reminded me of when I was a kid, before I knew that asparagus was a fancy food people ate with pricey meals or bought at grocery stores. We reminisced about how there used to be tons of asparagus growing right across the street before they filled in the irrigation ditch, and back by the stream, before all the houses started going in, and in some fields...we knew all the good spots. Asparagus "Hunting" was something everyone in the neighborhood did I think, because you had to get out first or it would all be gone.
Funny how Asparagus Hunting is such a fond memory, because I don't think I was always excited about being assigned to "go get some asparagus for dinner." I do remember that I always LOVED asparagus though. yum! Now that I don't have asparagus patches growing nearby, I really wish store-bought stalks tasted the same as wild asparagus!
Makes me wonder what things I do that I will think are cool later, but are just part of life now. I think maybe packing fruit snacks in my church bag and not having to share them with anyone else might be one of them. And I think I am going to start looking out for those things & thinking they are cool now, instead of waiting until they are memories.
